Anna Sturla is all about working hard to earn her spot.
The Davis, Calif., resident is editor in chief of Davis Senior High’s newspaper, The Hub. She has won several journalism awards, including the John F. Kennedy award for a series she co-wrote about issues faced by Latino students.
She has been president of the Gay Straight Alliance in high school and junior high and is on the San Francisco youth council of the alliance’s national network. She identifies as queer.
“I love the term ‘queer’ because the established gay rights movement used to be just gay white males,” she said. “Now it’s for everyone.”
Which, according to Sturla, is exactly the way it should be.
