Standing out from the crowd is not an option for Evelyn Wang. It is a necessity.
She has bright cherry-red hair and black six-inch heels.
“I think it’s because I’m a drag queen at heart,” Wang said. “I love to be flamboyant.”
In addition to her one-of-a-kind look, Wang considers her writing a form of expression. She’s the co-editor in chief of Verde Magazine, the school magazine at Palo Alto High School in Palo Alto, Calif. She likes to write feature stories about eccentric topics. Sometimes, she gets complaints, even threats, from disgruntled readers, but Wang said she strives to report the truth.
Her work has been featured by the horror podcast Website Pseudopod.
“Ever since I could read and write, I’ve had a fascination with the manipulation of language,” she said.
Wang is the captain of her school speech team. She’s a fan of directors Quentin Tarantino, John Waters and Álex de la Iglesia.
After JCamp, Wang will attend the Cherubs journalism program at Northwestern University to further her passion for writing. There, she hopes to inspire others, whether it’s with her words or with her style.
