Sharan Gill’s inspiration to try journalism was right in front her in the fashion magazines and websites she was always reading.
She channeled that passion into joining the Phillips Academy paper, The Phillipian, when she transferred to the Andover, Mass. school as a sophomore. Now a senior, she is the paper’s Arts and Leisure editor and a contributor to Couturesque, an online fashion blog.
North Andover, Mass.
How I plan to use my JCamp skills: Bring social justice to my school newspaper by give voices to the voiceless and talking about issues such as racism, mental health and feminism.
Publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, The Coverture, Porter Magazine and Into The Gloss fuel her interest in writing people and fashion. She follows many fashion bloggers including Shini Park of Park & Cube and Blair Eadie of Atlantic Pacific.
When she is not writing, she is listening to music by The Strokes, Florence and the Machine, Mac DeMarco, King Krule, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. She’s also a fan of “Gilmore Girls,” “Mad Men” and “Downton Abbey.”
Her favorite movie director is Sofia Coppola and her favorite movies are “Marie Antoinette,” “Funny Face” and “Ratatouille.”
She is also a fan of the Harry Potter franchise and enjoys reading anything by Khaled Hosseini including “The Kite Runner,” “A Thousand Splendid Suns” and “In The Mountains Echo.”
She does not cook because she finds it stressful, but she enjoys trying new restaurants. Her favorite foods are seafood, Indian food and sushi.
Though she isn’t completely sure of what she would like to do when she graduates, she is sure that she wants a job that will let her travel as much as possible.
